The Best Man's Duties

  • Hands officiant an envelope holding donation or fee (groom provides envelope)
  • Holds the bride’s ring until vows are exchanged
  • Signs the wedding certificate
  • May stand in receiving line
  • Gives the first toast at reception
  • Participates in the wedding party dance
  • Participates in the garter toss if single and helps decorate newlywed’s car
  • Returns the groom’s attire (if rented)

The Groomsmen and Usher's Duties

  • Rents (or purchases) their own formal wear
  • Helps plan bachelor party
  • Attends the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner
  • Buys the bride and groom a gift
  • Escorts guests to their seats at ceremony
    • For female guest, right arm is offered, with couples, the male walks behind
    • Bride’s guests are seated to left
    • Groom’s guests are seated to the right
    • If one side is filling more quickly, balance them out
    • Just before bride enters; escort groom’s mother, then bride’s mother
  • Oversee transfer of all gifts to a secure location after reception
  • Participates in the wedding party dance
  • Participates in the garter toss if single
  • Helps decorate newlywed’s car
  • Returns own attire (if rented)

The Groom's Mother's Duties

  • Attends bridal shower
  • Spreads the word regarding where the couple are registered
  • Prepares guest list for groom’s family
  • Offers financial assistance to groom, if appropriate
  • Consults the mother of the bride regarding her wedding day attire
  • Plans rehearsal dinner, with groom’s father
  • Stands in receiving line

The Maid/Matron of Honor's Duties

  • Makes accommodation arrangements for out-of-town bridesmaids
  • Pays for her own wedding attire
  • Helps bride with pre-wedding tasks (gown, selection, addressing invitations, etc.)
  • Spreads the word regarding where the couple are registered
  • Keeps the bridesmaids organized
  • Organizes bachelorette party with help of the bridesmaids
  • Attends the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner
  • Buys the bride and groom a gift
  • Acts as bride’s personal aide on the day of the wedding and keeps her on schedule
  • Holds the grooms ring and the brides bouquet until vows are exchanged
  • Signs the wedding certificate
  • May stand in the receiving line
  • Participates in the wedding party dance
  • Participates in the bouquet toss if single and helps decorate newlywed’s car
  • Offers the bride smacks before the ceremony and reception
  • Helps arrange the bride’s veil and train at the alter and at the reception
  • Helps bride change into her going away clothes
  • Is responsible for the storage of wedding gown during honeymoon

The Bridesmaids' Duties

  • Attends bridal shower
  • Pays for their own wedding attire
  • Helps maid/matron of honor plan and pay for shower, bachelorette parties
  • Helps bride run last minute errands
  • Helps address invitations
  • Attends the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner
  • Buys the bride and groom a gift
  • Helps the bride with her train at the reception, if necessary
  • Participates in the wedding party dance
  • Participates in the bouquet toss if single
  • Helps decorate newlywed’s car

The Bride's Mother's Duties

  • Attends bridal shower
  • Helps with all wedding plans as needed
  • Spreads the word regarding where the couples are registered
  • Prepares guest list for bride’s family
  • Helps keep track of gifts received
  • Selects attire based on the style and colors of wedding
  • Participates in the wedding party dance
  • Stands in receiving line

The Bride's Father's Duties

  • Helps prepare guest list for bride’s family
  • Helps with all wedding plans as needed
  • Selects attire complimentary to grooms
  • Attends rehearsal and rehearsal dinner
  • May ride to the ceremony with bride
  • Stands in receiving line
  • Toasts the couple at the start of reception
  • Monitors bar and champagne supply during reception

The Groom's Father's Duties

  • Helps prepare guest list for groom’s family
  • Selects attire complimentary to grooms
  • Attends rehearsal and rehearsal dinner
  • Stands in receiving line

The Flower Girl and Ring Bearer Duties

  • Attends rehearsal and rehearsal dinner
  • Sprinkles flower petals for bride to walk on down aisle
  • Carries a white pillow with artificial rings attached
    If unable to stand for entire ceremony, may sit with parent
